The Prince of Wales First Fleet

The Prince of Wales by Marine Artist Frank Allen. The Prince of Wales transported Esther Eccles alias Ellen Wainwright to the penal colony of New South Wales. Prince of Wales built and launched 12 August 1786 a fully rigged ship 350 tons, 103 feet long and 29 feet wide. The vessel had a poop deck and quarter galleries. For the voyage to Botany Bay, Prince of Wales was under the command of Master John Mason. Prisoners were taken aboard at Portsmouth in March. When the Prince of Wales sailed there were 49 female convicts and 1 male convict George Youngson. Prince of Wales departed Portsmouth on Sunday 13 May. All the ships reached Botany Bay by Sunday 20 January 1788. With the discovery of Sydney Cove as the preferred site for the new settlement, the entire fleet departed Botany Bay for Port Jackson. The vessel operated around England until 1797 when her registration was transferred to Fort Royal, Martinique, after which, little is known.
