Les Stone Park

1975

Following the death of Les Stone First Mayor of the Rural City of Wodonga a park was dedicated to his memory. See dedication plaque. The Les Stone Park is situated adjacent to Wodonga West SS bordered by Lawrence Street where the Stone Family lived, Parkland Drive and Brockley Street where Les first taught at Ariel Street SS (now Wodonga SS). It is the main venue for naturalization ceremonies in Wodonga each year an acknowledgement of Les Stone's close involvement with the migrant community. Pictured is House Creek running along the eastern border of Les Stone Park. The creek regularly flooded and cut the town in half from Lawrence Street until a bridge was erected in 1967 (as reported in the Border Morning Mail). The bridge was widened some years later.
