Generations One to Six in Australia – 1865 to present day thereabouts

The television program ‘Who Do You think You are?’ has prompted a curiosity world wide in searching family history. New multi media and technology has made information more accessible. Government Registries have scrambled to take advantage of the new revenue streams as curious individuals and families pursue their ancestries. Software such as Family Tree Maker, Roost Magic, The Master Genealogist, RootsMagic, Family Historian and Legacy have taken the market by storm making the exercise of building a family tree almost seamless. The early pioneers of family genealogy would marvel at the resources available today. The importance of knowing who you and where your family came from varies from family to family. World renowned author and poet Carl Sandburg once observed:1

When a society or a civilization perishes, one condition can always be found. They forgot where they came from.

A final note in relation to Generations 6 and 5. We have deliberately been careful about documenting Births, Deaths and Marriages given many are living. Further, the BDM access is restricted so in many cases we have relied upon individuals and families to share information. It is also likely that we are not up to date. Any assistance from the families named would be greatly appreciated. In summary we have authenticated 7 generations in Australia dating from John Stone.

Connecting Australia back to ‘Olde England’ and the Stones of Devon

The next task was to authenticate the link from John Stone back to England. We have used a Registry Report template (with some modification) that encompasses the ancestry John Stone – Nicholas Goad Stone – John Stone – Josias Stone – Richard Stone – Richard Stone – Peter Stone – Anthony Stone – Anthonye Stone.

We divided the English family history in two:

  • John Stone to Josias Stone – 1989 to 1761
  • Josias Stone to Anthonye Stone – 1761 to the early 1600’s

We approached the task in this way for three reasons. First, it was important on our view to set out the research and methodology to demonstrate how we reached certain conclusions. The Australian research was aided by the fact that events are relatively recent and from Colonial times Birth Deaths & Marriage Records have been meticulously maintained. The foregoing contrasts sharply with record keeping in the UK. We researched records extending back to Elizabethan times, a herculean task for many researching their family history notwithstanding the skilled assistance of professional researchers and genealogists.

Second we have been able to authenticate the pedigree to Josias Stone with the result that we have an overall authenticated pedigree from Josias Stone to Jack Stone and Madeleine Stone of 8 generations from 1761 to 1989 spanning 228 years.

Third it is important to separate the era that pre-dates Josias Stone for the simple reason that it is largely unauthenticated and at time speculative. Records for this period 1760 to the late 1500’S were unreliable and at times missing. From Richard Stone to Anthonye Stone – 5 generations from 1760 to late 1500’s spanning 150 years thereabouts – we have been confronted by an array of lost or damaged records and in some cases we have concluded that the records simply did not exist. The single most important date in English genealogy (along with civil registration in 1837) dates from when Cromwell171 as Chief Minister to Henry VIII ordered each parish in England and Wales to keep a register of baptisms, marriages and burials. However the earliest date from which many Registers exists is 1598 when it was ordered that every parish should keep a bound register and older registers (usually on single sheets) should be copied into it. However many parishes only made their copies from Elizabeth I, first Regnal year.172 Also the introduction of civil registration in 1837 appears to have been haphazard at times. By way of contrast the fledgling Crown Colony of New South Wales maintained records dating from 1788 with the arrival of the First Fleet. As with all genealogies, to use the vernacular you ultimately ‘hit the wall’ as happened for the Stone Family in South Poole.

The narrative set out in the following Chapter Generations in the UK was largely facilitated by British Ancestors and supplemented by our own and other family members still residing in the UK. Finally, the narrative includes the historical setting at the time to give context to the generations of the Stone Family living and working in the UK.
