Shane Stone 1st Armoured Regiment Robinson Barracks

1997

Chief Minister Shane Stone relived old memories with the arrival of the 1st Armoured Regiment, Royal Australian Army to Robinson Barracks, Palmerston. Wearing his beret of former armoured regiment 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles (8th/13th VMR), subsequently merged with the 4th/19th Prince of Wales Light Horse in 1992, he counted the invitation to Robinson Barracks as one of the highlights of his term. Revived in 1949 after WWII the regiment drew its lineage from three previously existing light horse regiments – the 8th, 13th and 20th Light Horse Regiments – and through these linkages inherited battle honours from the Boer War, WWI and WWII. Through the 20th Light Horse, it was linked to the Victorian Mounted Rifles. Shane Stone completed all his training and courses at Puckapunyal and in 1970 topped the Centurion tank gunnery course earning promotion to the exalted rank of Lance Corporal. He learned to drive various scout cars including Ferrets and Saracens. Also, M113A1 armored personnel carriers and Studebaker trucks (double clutch), many of the assets handed down by the regular Army to the CMF (later Reserve). The Northern Territory takes great pride in the relationship with the Australian Defence Force and successive Chief Ministers of both political persuasion have worked with Defence as part of developing the North.
