LAWASIA Darwin Secretariate Office Opening

1 March 1996

LAWASIA is a regional association of lawyers, judges, jurists and legal organisations, which advocates for the interests and concerns of the Asia Pacific legal profession. For over fifty years, LAWASIA has operated as a platform to promote the cross-jurisdictional exchange of legal knowledge; as a voice of the legal profession; and as a conduit for encouraging adherence to mutually-held principles of the rule of law, professional integrity and the protection of human rights. In 1996 consistent with the Northern Territory's engagement of the Asia Pacific region then Attorney General Shane Stone agitated for the LAWASIA Secretariat to relocate from Perth to Darwin. As Chief Minister Shane Stone officiated at the official opening of the LAWASIA office in NT House. The NT Government further provided financial support to facilitate the move. A subsequent Territory Labor Government generally disengaged from Asia and surrendered the Secretariate to QLD. Shane Stone was Awarded Honorary Life Membership of LAWASIA in recognition of his commitment to the Rule of Law in the Asia Pacific and support for the relocation of the LAWASIA Secretariat to Darwin from Perth. Shane Stone officially declares the Secretariate open for business.
