Visit of President Ramos of the Philippines to NT

23 August 1995

Visit of His Excellency President Fidel ‘Eddie’ Valdez Ramos and the First Lady Amelita ‘Ming’ Martinez-Ramos of the Philippines to Darwin. Ramos was the 12th President of the Philippines from 1992-1998; served in the Cabinet of President Corazon Aquino as Chief-of-Staff of the Armed Forces (AFP), later Chief of Integrated National Police, and thereafter as Secretary of National Defence from 1986-1991. The visit to the NT was at the invitation of Chief Minister Stone to witness the historic Memorandum of Association between the Philippines and the Northern Territory under the auspices of BIMP-EAGA. Filipino Australians travelled from throughout the NT to hear President Ramos address the Legislative Assembly – a first for an Asian Head of State to address an Australian Parliament.
