Personal letter from Colliers Jardine Director

11 February 1999

Correspondence from Mr Chris Hyland, Director, Colliers Jardine Residential following the retirement of Shane Stone as Chief Minister of Australia's Northern Territory. Extensive mail, fax and telephone messages were received from throughout the Territory and from Australia wide, hence, a small selection of the correspondence has been included in the archives. Chris Hyland's short letter was one of the most moving received. Extract: ''...congratulations on your distinguished term as Chief Minister...You will be remembered as having the candour of Keating, the wit of Whitlam and the courage of Kennett...our political stage is so intoxicated by mediocrity...''. Shane Stone's reply of 28 April 1998 attached included this extract: ''I left behind a thriving economy and policies if adhered to, will ensure that the Territory continues to grow and prosper in the time ahead...I never pretended to be perfect but what you saw was what you got. I am a great believer that you need to be fearless in your approach to public policy and to drive the economy with a hands-on approach if you are to demonstrate real leadership''.
