NQLIRA infrastructure and betterment

2019

The causeway over Prairie Creek in the Flinders Shire near Hughenden before and during the weather event of February 2019. Also, a re-engineering proposal modelled on the Galah Creek project completed in 2011. The causeway raised from both approaches and multiple square concrete culverts included in the design to allow free-flowing flood water. Some infrastructure is often repaired just in time to be damaged again during the next weather event, making it harder for communities to build resilience and withstand natural disasters. Critically important is to break this cycle and enable councils to build bridges, roads, floodways and other essential infrastructure to a more resilient standard. This is an exercise in betterment if done properly in a considered way. The estimated TMR cost for a project of this nature is $3 million.
